About our Site
Plymyard was inaugurated in 2001. This followed a general meeting of the plot holders which had been called following a sustained outbreak of vandalism. The meeting decided that in order to reduce this menace that an Association of plot holders would be formed to speak with a united voice. A committee was appointed and the work began.
This 90 plot site was very under-used with only about 20% of the plots in cultivation. It was decided to try and get all the plots ‘let’ as it was felt that the more eyes and ears there were on site, the less chances the vandals would have. One of the first actions in the recruitment drive was to rename the site, which had been known as ‘Site 32’ – rather like a Soviet Gulag! We chose the name ‘Plymyard Hall’ in order to reflect the name of the Victorian mansion that had once stood on the grounds. This would also give us a link with our past – most important.
As a measure of our success the site is now full, with a waiting list. Sadly, we still experience vandal attacks, but cooperation with the local police, the council and other agencies may well have reduced the problem.
With the aid of a grant we have purchased machinery and a container in which to store it. This is available to all members at no charge (for the moment). Hardcore paths have been laid to replace the never-cut grass and we joined both the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners and the Wirral Federation of Allotment Societies.
We have a most active committee which has been organizing small jobs around the site as well as running an annual show and various social events.
Our site is evolving to reflect the modern desire for healthy living in a secure environment. Our work has just begun……………….!
